History of HexaHexa is an arcade puzzle game, developed and released by D. R. Korea in 1986. It is the only coin-op game by this company. In the game, the player has to arrange falling blocks of three colorful pieces in a way that the colored symbols align vertically, horizontally or diagonally. When connected together, the pieces will disappear, dropping down those that were positioned above them. There are two special blocks available – power blocks that destroy all of the pieces of the same color that the player connects them to. The speed of the game changes back and forth according to the backgound image that the player has unlocked – if the image is black, the speed is slow; it increases as the picture brightens up. Some sources note the similarities between Hexa and later games, such as the gameplay of Sega's Columns, released in 1990; soundtrack of Konami's Treasure of USAS, released in 1987; and playfield background graphics. Hexa has received very controversial opinions. The gameplay itself is not as captivating as expected of a coin-op game, and the logic behind speed variations is hard to notice at first. Also, the game rewards the player with images of females as the player destroys more blocks. Despite not being able to gain popularity, it is still a challenging and solid game to play.
