History of Zero WingZero Wing is a side-scrolling shoot-'em-up arcade game, developed by Toaplan and published by Taito in 1989. It is responsible for creating a widely famous internet meme "All you base are belong to us", thanks to its low quality language translation. The aim of the game, as in most games of this genre, is to destroy hordes of enemies that appear on the screen and to not get hit by any projectiles that they shoot, as well as to avoid collision with the enemy ships or the foreground scenery. The player controls a "ZIG" star fighter, which has several different ways to attack. There is a small variety of power-ups available in the game. They can be obtained by destroying power-up ships that drop the bonuses which can then be collected to obtain a different weapon or sometimes a shield. After becoming fairly successful in the arcades and game centers, Zero Wing was ported to several other platforms, including the famous Sega Mega Drive version, released in Europe. This version is well-known for the badly translated game intro, where the characters exchange a few messages that are complicated to understand due to their bad grammar. In this intro is the famous line "All your base are belong to us", which became a widely popular internet meme. The game itself has received some controversial reviews from the modern gaming websites, being mosly criticized for the bad translation and praised for the good music.
