Excite Bike Excite Bike was initially released for Nintendo's Famicom System in Japan, and for the N.E.S in the United States as part of a sports compendium. The game proved to be very popular, especially in the U.S. This was largely due to the pick up and play mentality of the game. Some gamers don't want a back story or a 100 page manual to read, they just want a fun gaming experience, and Excite Bike didn't disappoint.
The History of Excite Bike
First released in Japan on November 30th 1984, and designed by gaming genius Shigeru Miyamoto. Developed and published solely by Nintendo, Excite Bike is a single or multi-player game of the racing genre.
The objective is to try and qualify for the Excite Bike Championship. This is achieved by placing 3rd or higher in the challenge races. It wasn't about racing against the competition but rather a challenge to beat the clock.
The controls were simple, A and B, were used for the throttle and boost respectively, while the bikes position was controlled by the directional pad. Over use of the throttle will cause the bike to over heat and inevitably slow down.
There were three game play modes, which are; Selection A – A solo race. Selection B – Computer controlled player joins the race, and tries hard to knock you off track. Design Mode – The player could design his/her own track to use in either mode A or B. Conversion and Sequels The game has only ever spawned two true sequels, which are; Mario Excite Bike (1997) Excite Bike 64 (2000) Excite Truck (2007) However, Excite bike has been included in various other Nintendo releases as a mini-game. The game has been released on various other Nintendo home consoles, including; GameCube Game Boy Advance Wii
