History of Aero Fighters

Aero Fighters, a vertically scrolling 'shoot them up' arcade game, also known as Sonic Wings in Japan, was first released as a coin-op game in 1992 by a company called Video System.

The game features militaristic settings and has a general storyline which leads to an unexpected twist. In the game, the player controls a military jet fighter and has to shoot his way through hordes of enemy planes, rockets, helicopters, tanks, turrets, and all sorts of other equipment in order to reach a boss at the end of the stage and kill it to advance further in the game. There are eight levels in total, then the game repeats. Four first levels feature same difficulty setting and are random, while the remaining four have increased difficulty.

Aero Fighters was a successful game and spawned several follow-ups, including Aero Fighters 2 and 3, Sonic Wings Special, and Aero Fighters Assault. The original game was ported to other platforms and received several later releases in emulated versions for different home video game consoles. The game has two sequels for the Neo-Geo, one for the arcades and one in 3D for the Nintendo 64.

Aero Fighters received a lot of positive feedback and is to this day considered to be one of the classic games of the vertically scrolling 'shoot them up' genre, also known as 'space shooter' genre. Today it can be found in several emulated versions, as a port on modern game consoles or in flash version on the internet.
