History of Karate Blazers

Karate Blazers is a game that was released in 1991 by a Japanese company Video System Co Ltd. The game follows classic 'beat them up' genre as a horizontal side-scrolling arcade coin-op

In order to advance in the game, the player must face numerous enemies in a close-up fight. The main character is able to perform few basic punches and kicks which, in combination with movement and jumps, can be turned into more powerful special attacks.

Each stage is filled with a certain amount of various enemies. Some of them are more difficult to beat than the others, as they either have more hitpoints or are able to use special moves. The difficulty of the game increases with each next level and, of course, every stage ends with a boss battle. Additional players can be added, up to four players at the same time in a cooperative mode.

Karate Blazers had its own good and bad sides. Praised for good animation and high detailed small sprites, the game was often referred to as 'fun' and 'exciting' by those who did not play it for a long time at it. However, most of the players who did spend a few extra credits to pass the first stage, recalled their experience with the game as 'boring' or 'repetitive'. Mostly because the levels got longer and no new action was introduced. This led the game to not being successful and not receiving any follow-ups or ports.
