History of Flip & Flop

Flip and Flop is an action puzzle game for Atari 800, developed and released by First Star Software in 1983.

In the game, the player controls two animals – kangaroo Flip and monkey Mitch (not Flop) who try to escape from the zoo and not get caught by a zoo keeper.

The game features two different perspectives that are triggered by playing a different character. So, when the player controls the kangaroo, the perspective of the level is normal, with the bottom of the character being on the tiles that are under him. However, when the level switches the player to control the monkey, the whole perspective changes, as the level comes to be upside down, with the top of the character being on the tiles that are above him.

This element makes the game challenging in a completely new and original way. The game itself has a creative approach to the general puzzle game genre. Its levels are increasingly difficult and thrilling, as sometimes, due to the size of the stage, the player can only hear the zoo keeper, but cannot see him.

Flip and Flop was a popular game for its time and received several ports to other consoles, the Commodore 64 among them. It is up to this day considered a classic and original game, and is recommended to play for all those who like to have a mind-bending experience.
